PRE & POST OP PROCEDURE
FIVE STEPS
_______________
to the new, more confident you.
1FIRST APPOINTMENT
_______________
At your first appointment I will get to know you and take a detailed history of why you are considering surgery. I will examine you with my chaperone and go through any 3D modelling images you have provided.
We will go over what operation I think would be suitable to achieve your goals and I may ask you to do some homework before our next visit.
I will also ask you to have some professional photographs done which I will organise.
2SECOND APPOINTMENT
_______________
At your second appointment (which will be at least 2 weeks after your first) we will review things again and decide on an operative approach TOGETHER.
You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and then will be offered an operation date. We will also review any before and after pictures you would like to go into in more detail.
I am always happy to see patients again before an operation as this is key to joint decision making but 2 is the minimum. Per-operative visits are not charged independent of how many there are.
3THE SURGERY
_______________
You will be welcomed by our friendly ward staff, myself, and my anaesthetist. This process is covered in detail in the following section found below.
4RECOVERY
_______________
You will recover in your own room and will only be allowed home when safe to do so.
On discharge you will be given any medication you need and a contact telephone number to call in event of problems. I am also contactable via my PA Karen.
5AFTERCARE
_______________
You will be given aftercare advice on the day of surgery and will be seen in my clinic 2-3 weeks after your operation.
It is especially important to take things easy for this period and adhere to any advice given regarding keeping your surgical site clean and dry/wearing a bra.
WANT TO SEE YOUR
BEFORE & AFTER?
ON THE DAY
_______________
What to expect on the day of your operation.
_______________
What to bring with you.
You will be asked to come to the hospital on the morning of your operation around 7am having had nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours previously.
These instructions will also be given to you when you have your pre-operative assessment.
In the vast majority of cases you will need to bring a supportive post-operative bra with you. You should bring some slippers and a dressing gown with you.
_______________
Nursing staff.
When you arrive onto the ward you will be shown to your modern and private room by one of the friendly ward staff and will be introduced to your named nurse for the duration of your hospital stay.
You will usually be able to bring someone with you but during the Covid-19 pandemic this may not be possible to reduce footfall in the hospital.
_______________
Last checks made.
You will be visited by your anaesthetist (usually Dr Cathryn Mantovani) and your surgeon (Mr Ash Subramanian)
Dr Mantovani will run through your anaesthetic plan and answer any questions you may have.
Mr Subramanian will complete the consent process.
You will have had a copy of the information sheet for your procedure provided previously but this is your opportunity to have any last minute concerns addressed.
_______________
Going under.
When it is the time for your operation you will be collected by a porter who will take you to theatre.
You will be checked in to theatre in the anaesthetic room where your anaesthetist will see you again.
A small plastic tube will be placed into a vein in the back of your hand to allow medications to be administered.
These medications, and gas that you will be asked to breathe, will ensure you drift off to sleep smoothly and comfortably.
_______________
Waking up.
You will wake up in the recovery suite where the recovery nurse will look after you and from there will be taken back to the ward, where any accompanying family or friend will be waiting for you.
You will have medications prescribed to control your pain, and also medications to stop you feeling sick.
If you feel you need more of these then the nursing staff will administer accordingly.
_______________
Before going home.
Once on the ward you will be checked by our nurses and will be offered something to eat and drink.
Before going home you will be visited by Mr Subramanian and Dr Mantovani to make sure you feel well and can have any questions answered.
You will also be given discharge information and numbers to call in case of any problems and an appointment to see Mr Subramanian in 2 weeks will follow.
